As with many of the city’s surrounding Toronto, Ajax has taken advantage of its location close to a number of major transportation outlets with the main industry being manufacturing and distribution.  There are 170 businesses currently operating in this sector and the majority of those are building fabricated metal, transportation equipment, chemicals, and paper.  The second largest sector in terms of the number of employees is retail trade.  They actually have the most businesses in the area, with more than 230 establishments.  Also on the list with more than one hundred businesses are the healthcare, hospitality, and professional services industries.

The majority of the companies in Ajax are extremely small and employ less than five people.  This accounts for nearly half of the businesses that exist within the city.  There are only about fifty companies with an employee base of more than one hundred people, with the largest employer in the district being the Ajax-Pickering Site of the Rouge Valley Health Centre.  There are only six companies with more than five hundred employees on their payroll. 

With the amount of available space in the city of Toronto being harder to come by with each passing year, maybe start-up businesses and those that are expanding are seeing the potential of moving to other communities throughout the GTA.  There are no less than six new industrial or business parks currently in construction in Ajax and all of these are to respond to the demand for more commercial space. 

If you’re the owner of a small business than we really want to open your eyes to all that this community has to offer in terms of tax rebates, space, and business networking.  Some of the companies that you will find in the area are Volkswagen Canada Inc. and Nokia Products Ltd.  But, you don’t have to have a brand name as well known as these to find success here.
